Machine Shop Rules
To ensure safe practices in the machine shop, the School of Engineering and Applied Science has adopted the following rules. These rules will be enforced consistently, and violations of the rules may lead to a temporary or permanent suspension of machine privileges.
General Shop Rules
- Promptly report any injuries to the machine shop staff.
- The machine shop is for projects related to research or class work. Personal projects are not allowed.
- No job will be started without proper authorization.
- Before starting a project, know the entire procedure for completing the job.
- All projects require a drawing that has been reviewed and approved by the machine shop staff.
- Cell phones and other electronic devices should be turned off and not used in the shop.
- Machine clean up: all machines in the machine shop areas must be cleaned up after you have finished using them. Shop staff will check your machine before you leave.
- AII borrowed tools must be signed out with the appropriate paperwork.
- Report all broken tools or unsafe conditions to the machine shop technicians.
- NO ONE may use a permit under false pretenses (e.g. using a forged permit or representing someone else's permit as your own), or aid or abet another person in using a permit under false pretenses.
General Safety Rules
- NEVER operate a machine tool unless you have been properly instructed in its use.
- NO ONE may work alone in the shop.
- NO ONE may work in the shop after closing or when a university machinist is not present.
- Use the proper safety gear for the job at hand, especially brazing, welding, grinding, etc.
- Do not touch cutting tools or machine parts while they are in motion.
- Do not handle metal chips.
- All cutting tools are extremely sharp: handle them carefully.
- Always request help when you need it.
- Avoid distractions and focus on the work at hand. Never take unnecessary risks or rush through a job. It is easy to become injured or to injure others in the shop.
- Do not wear watches, rings, bracelets or loose clothing in the shop. All hoodie strings, ear buds, and loose clothing will be tucked away.
- No sandals or open toe shoes may be worn in the shop.
- Long hair (shoulder length or longer) must be tied back.
- Hot parts will be tagged and should not be taken from the welding area until they are cool.
